Gender Justice
Ensuring that people of all gender identities and expressions can live, learn, and work with safety, dignity, and respect.
Pervasive sexual harassment, discrimination, wage theft, violence, and other barriers continue to unfairly burden women and gender-expansive people, including transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals, preventing them from reaching their full potential. This is especially true for lower-wage workers and students of color. No one should be denied access to school programs, workplace protections, essential public facilities, health care, or accurate identity documents because of their sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic. We work toward the systematic fair treatment of people of all gender identities and gender expressions, resulting in equitable opportunities and outcomes for all.
Our Areas of Expertise
Our Approach
Public Counsel’s Audrey Irmas Gender Justice Project focuses on advocating for low-wage workers and students who face gender-based harassment, discrimination, and violence at work and in educational institutions. We aim to create more equitable and just conditions at school and in the workplace, which strengthens families and improves health, education, and prosperity for entire communities. Our approach includes:
1
Direct Legal Support
We provide free legal advice and representation to low-income workers and students facing harassment, discrimination, or other gender-based injustices at work or school. Our services include weekly advice clinics, help with complaints, and support from law students and pro bono attorneys to ensure more people can access their rights.
2
Impact Litigation & Policy Advocacy
We pursue systemic change through strategic litigation and legislative advocacy. From challenging workplace exploitation to pushing for stronger family leave protections, we partner with local and statewide coalitions to promote gender equity and economic security for women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and low-wage workers.
3
Community Education & Outreach
We empower workers and students by raising awareness of their rights and connecting them to legal protections. Through “Know Your Rights” materials, trainings, and partnerships with community groups and schools, we equip people with the tools to recognize and challenge unlawful practices.
