Public Counsel has been named the winner of the Community Advocacy and Impact Initiative category at The Recorder’s 2026 California Legal Awards, an honor recognizing legal initiatives that drive measurable change and represent the cutting edge of community advocacy work.
Selected from a competitive field of 12 finalists, Public Counsel was recognized for its community-centered advocacy during a period of urgent need—defending immigrant communities, protecting civil rights, supporting disaster recovery, strengthening housing stability, and expanding protections for families, tenants, small businesses, and street vendors.
The award reflects the strength of Public Counsel’s model: combining direct legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and deep community partnerships to create lasting change. In 2025, that model enabled Public Counsel to respond to the Los Angeles County wildfires, expand Know Your Rights education during a surge in federal immigration enforcement, help lead major civil rights litigation, and advance policy reforms that strengthened protections for communities across California.
Public Counsel is proud to receive this recognition alongside legal leaders across the state who are using the law to advance justice and strengthen communities throughout California.
