Veterans’ Rights

Veterans’ Rights

Those who serve our country deserve to come home to stability, dignity, and the full benefits and services promised to them and their families.

Veterans and transitioning service members often face systemic barriers to meeting their basic needs, from poverty and unemployment to housing instability, trauma, and difficulty accessing care. Public Counsel stands with veterans and their families by providing pro bono legal representation and advocacy aimed at removing these barriers. We fight to ensure access to essential benefits and services that promote long-term stability, including healthcare, housing, employment, and mental health support. Every veteran deserves the opportunity to thrive in civilian life.

Our Approach

Public Counsel’s Center for Veterans’ Advancement provides free legal services to veterans and their families, ensuring access to benefits, healthcare, and supportive services. We also challenge systemic failures through landmark litigation to hold the VA accountable for providing benefits and services to veterans and family caregivers. Our approach includes:

1

Direct Legal Services

We provide individual legal support to veterans and their family caregivers, helping them secure critical VA benefits and other essential services. Our attorneys work directly with clients to resolve disputes, advocate for promised benefits, and navigate complex administrative systems—ensuring that both veterans and their loved ones receive the support promised to them.

2

Impact Litigation & Advocacy

We pursue high-impact lawsuits designed to reform systemic failures affecting veterans and family caregivers nationwide. Public Counsel’s Opportunity Under Law project is leading landmark litigation against the VA to end veteran homelessness and provide permanent supportive housing and medical care for disabled veterans in Los Angeles.

3

Legal Clinics

In partnership with pro bono attorneys, we host legal clinics that bring free legal assistance to veterans across Los Angeles County. These clinics help veterans access critical benefits and provide support for important procedures, such as filing for discharge upgrades.
