Veterans’ Rights

Veterans’ Rights

Those who serve our country deserve to come home to stability, dignity, and the full benefits and services promised to them and their families.

Veterans and transitioning service members often face systemic barriers to meeting their basic needs, from poverty and unemployment to housing instability, trauma, and difficulty accessing care. Public Counsel stands with veterans and their families by providing pro bono legal representation and advocacy aimed at removing these barriers. We fight to ensure access to essential benefits and services that promote long-term stability. By ensuring veterans have permanent supportive income in the form of VA benefits, we strengthen access to resources like healthcare, housing, employment, and mental health support. Every veteran deserves the opportunity to thrive in civilian life.

Our Approach

Public Counsel’s Veterans’ Advancement team provides free legal services to veterans and their families, ensuring access to benefits, healthcare, and supportive services. We also challenge systemic failures through landmark litigation to hold the VA accountable for providing benefits and services to veterans and family caregivers. Our approach includes:

1

Direct Legal Services

We provide individual legal support to veterans, helping them secure critical VA benefits and other essential services. Our attorneys work directly with clients to resolve disputes, advocate for promised benefits, and navigate complex administrative systems—ensuring that both veterans and their loved ones receive the support promised to them.

2

Policy Advocacy & Litigation

We engage in policy advocacy on the federal and state level that advances economic justice and removes barriers to veterans receiving their benefits. Public Counsel’s Opportunity Under Law is leading landmark litigation against the VA to end veteran homelessness and provide permanent supportive housing and medical care for disabled veterans in Los Angeles.

3

Community Outreach

We host a monthly clinic at the Sepulveda VA that brings free legal assistance to veterans across Los Angeles County. This clinic helps veterans access critical benefits. We strive to actively engage with the veteran community by attending coalition meetings and veteran-centered events, as well as providing training sessions on veteran-related benefits, procedures, and law.
