Update (June 3, 2025): We’re relieved to share that 4-year-old Sofia and her mother have been granted one year of humanitarian parole, allowing Sofia to remain in the U.S. and continue her life-saving medical treatment. Thanks to significant media attention and public outcry, support from elected officials, and the tireless advocacy of Sofia’s mother, USCIS contacted Public Counsel last week to discuss processing a new application for humanitarian parole for Sofia and Deysi, which was granted this morning.

Original Story (May 30, 2025):
Sofia is a joyful 4-year-old girl with a rare and life-threatening medical condition called short bowel syndrome. She came to the U.S. legally in 2023 under humanitarian parole so she could receive specialized medical treatment not available in Mexico. Thanks to the extraordinary care she receives at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Sofia is thriving.

But in April, the federal government revoked her humanitarian status and ordered her family to leave the country immediately. Sofia’s doctors have warned that without her daily treatment, she will die within days.
Public Counsel is proud to represent Sofia and her family. We are fighting with everything we have to reverse this devastating decision and ensure she continues receiving the care that is keeping her alive. Thanks to public pressure—including national media coverage and the outpouring of support from people like you—USCIS is now actively reviewing the family’s new humanitarian‑parole request and appears to be moving swiftly.
But the fight isn’t over. We’re doing everything we can to defend Sofia’s right to safety and care, and ensure that no child is forced to suffer or die because of a senseless bureaucratic decision. You can help us keep the pressure on.
Sign our petition today and join us in demanding compassion, dignity, and justice for Sofia.

Thank you for standing with us—and with the thousands of families like Sofia’s who count on Public Counsel every day.
