Mortgage Servicing & Foreclosure
Overview
Public Counsel’s Consumer Rights and Economic Justice project helps low-income homeowners avoid foreclosure and remedy mortgage servicing errors. Many of our homeowner clients have made tremendous sacrifices to preserve their homes in an era of stagnant wages, rising costs, and gentrification. Our clients are predominantly people of color, and many are monolingual Spanish speakers who live in multi-generational households or older adults on a fixed income.
We assist individual homeowners at risk of foreclosure by advising them of their rights and their options to remain in their homes, and work with mortgage servicers to assert our clients’ rights. We also engage in advocacy at the local, state, and federal level for policies that support low-income homeowners and allow our clients to maintain and build intergenerational wealth.
