For-Profit Colleges & Student Loan Debt
Overview
Our Experts
Individuals in the U.S. owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loan debt—exceeding credit card and auto loan debt combined. Every year, over one million borrowers default on their loans, with students from for-profit colleges twice as likely to default. Many for-profit institutions have been accused of targeting vulnerable individuals with deceptive and predatory practices, leaving students burdened by debt, holding degrees of little value, and facing limited job prospects.
Public Counsel’s Consumer Rights & Economic Justice project helps student borrowers harmed by predatory for-profit schools, struggling with loan repayment, or facing abusive debt collection practices.
