Eviction Defense

Overview

Client with eviction notices
Client Arthur Rivera holds dozens of notices that he received after an investment firm purchased the building where he rents. The barrage of false notices made him worry that he would end up homeless again, but Public Counsel successfully kept him in his home.

With the economic downturn impacting job security for many already struggling families and individuals, many more Angelino tenants are at the precipice of homelessness because of an eviction. Public Counsel’s Homelessness Prevention Project provides full-scope pro bono eviction defense representation to tenants and families at risk of displacement or struggling with landlord harassment.

The Shriver Housing Project – Los Angeles is the largest of seven pilot projects approved by the California Judicial Council to provide critical legal services to low-income individuals and families who might otherwise not have access to legal assistance or representation. Through this program, Public Counsel takes eviction defense cases for full representation through a centralized intake system at the downtown Stanley Mosk Courthouse.
