Jeffrey Aler is Public Counsel’s Director of Human Resources. Jeffrey began his career in New York City at the Bronx Family Court as an intern to the Chief Clerk. There, he served underprivileged communities and helped shape day-to-day operations before accepting a Case Manager position with Safe Horizon, the largest victim services nonprofit organization in the United States. As a Case Manager, Jeffrey worked closely with women of color and victims of abuse and violent crimes, helping his clients prepare petitions for orders of protection, facilitate custody disputes, and secure safe shelter.
In 2015, Jeffrey joined the City of New York at the District Attorney’s Office of New York County (DANY), quickly becoming a Deputy Director of Human Resources at his second city agency, NYC Emergency Management, in 2018. While at the DANY, Jeffrey worked alongside the agency’s principals, including District Attorney Cyrus Vance, to overhaul the EEO program. In 2019, Jeffrey accepted an offer to join Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools (OWNCS) as its Human Resources Director. During his tenure at OWNCS, Jeffrey built the Human Resources Department from the ground up by crafting and implementing various policies and services customized for a school setting. Jeffrey also developed and oversaw the implementation of the organization’s social distancing policy and subsequent vaccination policy in the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19.
Jeffrey grew up in Midland, Texas before moving to Philadelphia as an adolescent and later to New York City. He is an alumnus of Temple University (BA Political Science) and John Jay College of Criminal Justice (Master Public Administration, HR and Management). Outside of work, Jeffrey enjoys reading, catching up on reality TV, and visiting beaches, parks, and food and cultural institutions.
