Statement by Public Counsel President & CEO, Mónica Ramírez Almadani, in Response to Racist Remarks by LA City Councilmembers

LOS ANGELES, CA – October 10, 2022 – Mónica Ramírez Almadani, Public Counsel’s President & CEO and holder of the Helen & Morgan Chu CEO Distinguished Chair, issued this statement:

“We are outraged by the anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, and otherwise racist comments made by Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and other L.A. City Councilmembers. Their private remarks are inexcusable and have no place in our society, especially not in the halls of power. They must be held to account for their statements and actions. The comments targeting an innocent child are equally appalling, as is the discussion about disenfranchising renters and reducing communities of color to nothing more than political chips.

This divisive rhetoric from our city leaders is not only shocking, but it is also harmful to our progress as a city and region. Public Counsel is located in Koreatown. We serve residents throughout Los Angeles County, and our clients are over 80% people of color. Our clients are renters, immigrants, low-income homeowners, small businesses, veterans, children, and more. The shared challenges our clients face are more numerous than any differences, and we know the power of multi-racial movements for justice. Our path forward as a city must come from uniting to face these challenges together. We denounce those whose words and actions serve to divide us.”
