Corporate
Achievement Award - DIRECTV
DIRECTV
will be the recipient of the 2009 Corporate Achievement Award. DIRECTV
is guided by the belief that corporate citizenship means
working for the common good. Their programs engage employees, customers,
and business partners in a variety of ways designed to strengthen families
and communities. DIRECTV’s special focus on education for children
and youth includes partnerships with over 5,000 schools around the
country, which help schools improve and enhance the K-12 educational
experience of millions of students annually.
In Los Angeles,
DIRECTV has taken a leadership role in the Mayor’s
Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, which oversees nearly 19,000 students
at ten of the lowest-performing public schools. Thanks to DIRECTV,
new parent and community engagement centers are being established at
all ten schools to help empower parents to become more involved in
their children's education.
Accepting the award
will be DIRECTV’s Executive Vice President,
General Counsel and Secretary Larry D. Hunter.
Presenting the Award will be Bruce Sewell, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Intel, recipient of the 2008 Corporate Achievement Award.

Law
Firm Pro Bono Award - Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker
LLP
With
extraordinary dedication and enthusiasm, last year Paul, Hastings,
Janofsky & Walker LLP provided unprecedented pro
bono assistance to thousands of the most vulnerable members of our
society. The firm assisted abused, disabled, and abandoned children
and youth, homeless families, refugees fleeing torture and death threats,
veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and scores of charities
and nonprofit organizations serving indigent and low income communities
and clients. Skillful advocacy by Paul Hastings attorneys, frequently
involving highly complex and technical matters, has increased access
to justice for those who have nowhere else to turn.
In addition to the sophisticated nature of its work, Paul Hastings
has also distinguished itself through the extraordinary number of pro
bono hours it dedicated to assisting clients globally. In 2008, it
provided over 75,000 hours of pro bono assistance internationally,
more than 68,000 in the United States. Over 14,400 hours an average
of nearly 94 hours per attorney were provided by its Los Angeles office,
over 40% to Public Counsel clients.
Accepting the Award on behalf of the firm will be its Chairman, Seth
M. Zachary.
